Grim Dawn is probably one of the best Action RPGs to be released in the past decade, if not one of the greatest of all time. Devised and developed by Crate Entertainment (a company made chiefly of former Iron Lore employees), it combines the solid 'kill, loot, upgrade, repeat' gameplay loop of older ARPGs like Diablo II with newer features tested in prior games like Titan Quest (which many of the creators helped program). The result is an endlessly enjoyable experience set in a rich and engrossing world built on foundations of dark fantasy with touches of gothic and Lovecraftian horror. Having sold over one million copies since its initial release, it has since risen even higher with the release of its first expansion last year, Ashes of Malmouth. Now, with these successes under their belt, the devs at Crate Entertainment have decided to go even further and take players deep into the history of the stricken land of Erulan with their next addition to the Grim Dawn universe: Forgotten Gods The forum post announcing its existence had only broad statements to make, including:
"Along with quality of life features, you will pursue new powers, hundreds of new Unique items and Monster Infrequents and more! Battle dozens of new foes across new dungeons and a new gameplay mode which we’ll be discussing in detail in the coming months!" and, "In the Forgotten Gods expansion, you will journey beyond the bounds of the Erulan Empire, traversing burning sands, lush oases and volcanic wastes to reach the sun beaten ruins of a city with secrets that should never have been disturbed. The flames of a forgotten god have been rekindled, sending ripples through the Eldritch realm and sowing terror even among the Witch Gods themselves." Beyond this and the title-card above, nothing else has been mentioned, leaving everything in the open to speculation, but given the game's thematic roots, we could be looking at a journey into a new Egypt-inspired desert (fitting territory for a number of reasons not limited to the game's Lovecraftian influence and the developers' previous experience with making a mythologically-modified Egypt for Titan Quest). I won't speculate past the point that spoilers might be required, but I will say that as a new-but-dedicated fan to the franchise, I am thoroughly looking forwards to whatever comes next!
